Jaleh “Jaye” Saghafi, BSN, RN, PSC, is a cardiovascular registered nurse and clinical educator based in Amherst, Ohio. Over three decades she has worked in hospitals and clinics across Northeast Ohio, in cardiovascular intensive care, transplant, trauma and surgical ICU, emergency, perioperative, and infusion settings. Much of that work has involved explaining complex clinical information clearly, both to patients and families and to physicians and care teams.

Early career: trauma, surgical and cardiovascular ICU

Saghafi earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Cuyahoga Community College. At Mt. Sinai Hospital in East Cleveland, she worked as a registered nurse and charge nurse in a 26-bed Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care Unit, where she coordinated staffing, patient acuity, and unit operations. She then joined the Cardiovascular ICU and transplant team at Cleveland Clinic. There she worked with cardiovascular specialists on complex therapies and managed advanced technologies, including intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) and ventricular-assist devices (VAD). Critical care, perioperative care and home care

She went on to work in SICU and emergency nursing at Firelands Hospital in Sandusky. After that, she worked in surgical intensive care, perioperative services, and the recovery room at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria. In home care in Amherst, she coordinated with physicians, healthcare agencies, ancillary providers, and community partners so that patients’ care continued without gaps.

Infection control leadership

At Avon Surgery Center, Saghafi served on the infection control leadership team and worked in the PACU. She identified an infection-control concern involving surgical marking pens and wrote revised policies to address it. She then presented the policies to nursing staff and about 15 attending physicians and residents. Compliance rose from 30% to 100% and stayed there for three consecutive quarters. She also led infection-control work across two surgical facilities, including medication audits and staff education. The full story is in the infection control case study.

Specialty infusion and clinical education today

Today she provides specialty infusion care and clinical education at Oberlin Ketamine Clinic, where she cares for about 20 patients a week under physician direction. She has also supported community outreach at Oberlin College, which brought in 10 student volunteers for upcoming mental health research. Her approach to teaching patients and reporting to physicians is described on the clinical and patient education page.

Community, education and life outside work

Outside work, Saghafi founded and facilitates a national Zoom mentoring group for young adults on the spectrum. It now has a core group of about 15 active members (see community leadership and mentoring). She holds a Pharmaceutical Sales Certification, a BSN from Indiana Wesleyan University, and active RN, ACLS, BLS, and PALS credentials. She is pursuing an MBA in Healthcare Administration at Western Governors University (see education and credentials). She also competes in masters-class bodybuilding, and in 2013 she placed second among 10 competitors.

Saghafi, who also goes by Jaleh Presutto-Saghafi, lives in Amherst, Ohio.
